Bushfires pose a great threat to human life and the environment, predominantly due to the particulate component in the smoke emissions. In addition to decreased air quality and visibility, bushfires also release large amounts of ozone precursors (CO, NOx, hydrocarbons) and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Haze monitoring is a measure of urban air quality. The principal cause of regional and urban haze is light extinction caused by fine particles, sulfates, organic and elemental carbon, nitrates and crustal matter. Particles between 0.1 and 1 µm in size are most effective at scattering light, in addition to being of great concern for human health.
