Australia’s bulk ports have witnessed extraordinary growth with shipped tonnage rising substantially in the last decade. Mining exports account for most of this growth (such as iron ore and coal) but further growth in bulk export is propelled by ongoing development of ore and mineral reserves, expansion of existing ports, and the addition of new and proposed ports. Bulk ports generally service a number of clients that all share the environmental responsibility along with the port authority. Typical environmental issues associated with bulk ports include measurement and control of fugitive dust emissions, water contamination and noise.
An added complexity for all Australian sea ports (bulk and passenger ports) and shipping in general is the adoption of stricter regulations on shipping emissions through United Nations IMO (MARPOL), the European Union requirement for reporting of ship emissions by 2018, and US EPA rule. Monitoring requirements may include particulates, SO2 and NOx related to diesel emissions.
Australian airports are amongst the busiest in the world based on passenger throughput. This is a surprising fact seen in light of the remoteness of Australia and relatively small population. Environmental noise monitoring is a major concern for airports. Water quality monitoring may be required as well as ambient air quality monitoring.
